When your provider’s mesh unit will help, and when it won’t

Jio and Airtel both sell a second unit now, and the decision comes down to one thing: what the signal is like at the spot where that unit would have to sit.

It comes up at renewal, or while the engineer is coiling his cable back onto the drum. For a little more each month, they’ll send a second unit for the back of the house. It sounds like the obvious fix. The problem is in the back bedroom, so put a box in the back bedroom.

Sometimes it is the right answer, and I have told people so. More often it changes very little, for the same reason the bedroom was weak to begin with.

What a mesh unit actually is

A mesh system is two or more units sharing one network name. One is plugged into your line. The others sit elsewhere in the house, listen to the first one over the air, and re-broadcast what they hear. Your phone decides which unit to hold on to, and it will not let go until another one is clearly louder. When the units can hear each other clearly, it works well.

Both of the big fibre providers here sell a version of it now. Airtel rents mesh extenders for a monthly fee plus a refundable deposit. Jio sells its extenders outright to JioFiber customers. One is a monthly line on your bill; the other is a single payment.

Every wireless hop costs you something

The second unit has to receive your data and send it on again. On a single radio it does both jobs on one channel, so every packet crosses the air twice, which is why a cheap booster or plug-in repeater halves your bandwidth in the act of extending it. Better mesh hardware keeps a separate radio for the hop between units, so the hop stops eating the airtime your devices are using.

That is the smaller problem. The bigger one is the route the hop takes. The link between the two units crosses the same walls, the same slab, the same mirrored wardrobe that stopped your router reaching the bedroom in the first place. You have not removed the obstacle. You have asked a second radio to fight it.

It comes down to where the second unit would sit

Walk to the spot where that unit would physically go. Not where you wish it could go — where there is a socket, out of the way, that nobody will trip over. Then look at your phone.

Whatever the signal is like at that spot is roughly what the mesh unit will get. It has a better aerial than your phone, but not by much. −67 dBm is the standard design threshold for reliable voice and video. If the spot is already below it, the unit is being fed a link it cannot serve well, and everything it re-broadcasts inherits the problem. Bars alone will not tell you: what decides whether the video plays is how far the signal sits above the background noise, and in a tower full of neighbouring networks that gap closes long before the bars do.

A node fed by a weak link cannot hand out a good one, however strong it reads on the phone sitting next to it.

When the provider’s unit is the right call

Plenty of homes pass that test. An open-plan flat with brick or plasterboard partitions rather than reinforced concrete shear walls, where the second unit would sit one room from the router and still read strong at that spot, is exactly what mesh was designed for. Short distances, light walls, and a gap that is one room slightly short rather than half the house dead.

It is also the right call if you rent. If you cannot drill or pull cable, wireless is your only option and the question is just which wireless. A provider unit on a monthly fee, supported by the people who supply the line, is a reasonable thing to take. No second vendor, and no argument about whose fault it is.

And ask one question before you decide anything. Can the node be fed by a cable instead of over the air? Jio’s extenders accept a wired connection. Ask whether the one you are being offered does. If there is a data point near where it would sit, that changes the answer completely. A wired node is not an extender at all. It is a proper second access point, and it will beat any wireless hop in the building.

When it will not help

The far bedroom behind two reinforced concrete walls is the hard case, and the most common one I get called about. The node has to sit either before those walls, where it can hear the router but not reach the bedroom, or after them, where it reaches the bedroom but can barely hear the router. Neither position works. There is no third place to put it.

Duplexes are harder again, because a floor slab stops more than a wall does. Terraces, balconies and gardens are a separate problem again — an indoor unit leaking through a door is not a plan, and outdoor areas need an outdoor-rated unit and a cable entry that will not let water track back into the wall.

Device count is its own trap. If twenty things are already fighting over a provider gateway that was never built for that load, a relay behind it only gives you a second way to reach an overloaded box. Congestion is the same story. If the real fault is a 2.4 GHz band shared with the whole building, another unit broadcasting into that crowded air is one more voice in a room where everyone is already shouting.

And above all, anywhere you can run a cable, run the cable. Wired backhaul is the single biggest difference between real coverage and a chain of units fighting each other.

The sum almost nobody does

I am not putting figures in this post. They change, and your provider’s current numbers are the only ones that matter. But do the arithmetic yourself. A rented unit is a payment you make every month for as long as you keep that connection, the hardware is never yours, and in Jio’s case at least it will not work on another provider’s line if you switch. Owned hardware is one payment, and it moves house with you.

Take the monthly figure you are quoted today and multiply it by the months you expect to stay on that connection. Three years is not a long time for a broadband line. Compare that total with what equivalent hardware costs once. For a renter on a one-year lease, rental can come out ahead. For someone in their own flat who is not moving, it usually does not. Rental is not a trick. The multiplication is just never shown to you.

What to check before you say yes

Stand in the spot and read your phone. Ask whether the unit can take a cable. Ask what happens if it does not fix the problem — the return window, the deposit, how many months you are committed for. Then test it properly: not a speed test next to the new unit, but a video call in the room that was broken, at the hour it is usually broken. That is the same order I work in, and it is why the hour of measurement before anything is mounted comes first.
