Hidden in the void, firing down through a gypsum tile. Nothing whatsoever in the room. Costs a little range and rules out a metal or heavily foiled ceiling, so it suits smaller rooms and corridors.

A mirrored wardrobe wall or a metal-mesh screen reflects a signal almost completely — it is a wall as far as WiFi is concerned, even where it looks like it opens the room up. We put the point on the right side of it from the start.
Surfaces you cannot chase, cannot patch invisibly, and cannot re-do for one cable. Anything crossing them is routed behind, above or below — decided on a drawing rather than by a contractor with a chisel.
A black box with four aerials, on the console, in the entrance lobby, because that is where the ISP put the socket. It goes into a ventilated enclosure in the utility and the room gets its surface back.
The single most common way this goes wrong: the network is thought about after the ceiling is closed, so it runs on the surface. One conversation at shop-drawing stage removes the entire problem.
The materials that make a room look expensive are, almost without exception, the ones that stop a signal. Mirror, metal mesh, stone and coated glass are chosen long before anyone asks where the WiFi goes — and by then the answer is already fixed.
A mirrored wardrobe run, a metal mesh grille or a fluted metal screen is a wall as far as the signal is concerned — and unlike a wall, nobody drew it as one.
Around 54 dB through reinforced concrete. A stone-clad feature wall on a concrete core is the single most effective signal barrier in a normal flat.
Timber costs about 3 dB. Plain glass and a plasterboard partition cost almost nothing at all. A stud wall or a clear glass screen is invisible to the signal — so a lot of your palette is completely safe.

You can run this alongside the fit-out, and on a small flat it is very manageable. The difficulty is that nearly every decision has to be made before something gets closed, painted or polished.
The incoming point is usually in a meter cupboard, on a utility balcony, or wherever the builder found convenient. Moving it is sometimes trivial and sometimes needs the operator. Worth knowing before you design the console it is going to live behind.
Above the false ceiling, behind the panelling, inside the skirting, through the joinery — all decided while those things are still open. A cable pulled after the painter has finished means chasing a wall and then matching a paint batch.
Cabling lands after the electrical first fix and before the ceiling is boarded; termination after plaster and before final paint. Two short visits at the right moment — or one long one afterwards, with dust sheets over finished furniture.
In-ceiling and in-wall points that sit flush and take a paint finish, rather than a white plastic box screwed to a feature wall. Back-box positions have to be agreed with the joiner, because a point behind a wardrobe is a point that does not work.
A point on the ceiling needs either PoE from the switch or a spur and an adapter somewhere out of sight. Deciding which, and getting it into the electrical layout, is far easier before the conduit goes in than after.
Signal behaves differently once the wardrobes, the mirrors, the stone and the upholstery are in. Whatever passed on an empty slab needs checking again at the end — and somebody has to come back and re-tune it.
On a two-bedroom flat this is an afternoon of thinking and a couple of well-timed visits. On a villa with a basement, a lift and a lawn, it is a package of its own.
Send the layout insteadThe body, yes — sprayed to your ceiling colour before it goes up, which is how most of ours end up. Not over the front face, because that is the part the signal comes through. In practice the visible result is a disc in your ceiling colour rather than a white one.
Often, yes — above a gypsum tile or inside carpentry, with nothing at all in the room. It costs some range and it rules out metal ceilings and solid timber doors on the cabinet. We will tell you which rooms can take it and which cannot.
Not if we are brought in before the ceiling closes — everything runs in the void and the conduit that is already there. If we do have to open something, making it good is our scope, not your contractor's, and we agree it with you in advance rather than on the day.
Whichever you prefer, and we hold to it. Some studios want us entirely behind them so the client only ever hears one voice; others introduce us directly. If we are behind you, we will not hand your client a card.

We will happily work with it if it is decent, and say so if it is not. Most consumer mesh fails in a finished flat for one reason — the units talk to each other over the air through your walls instead of over a cable. Give the same hardware a wired path and it often behaves.
Tell us early and we design around them. An access point has more latitude than most services — moving one a metre along a ceiling usually costs little in coverage, and where it does cost something we will say so and show you what the room gives up. Far easier to resolve on a drawing than after the cut-out has been made.
